Obedience Training

What is Dog Obedience Training?

At The Obedient Dog, obedience training begins with basic manners. You work as a team with your dog, using positive reinforcement or rewards to effectively communicate commands like sit, come, down, and place. Advanced dog obedience focuses on leash walking, come when called, off-leash work and dealing with distractions.

Obedience 1:  Basic Manners

This group class is designed to help you and your dog learn and practice basic obedience training like sit, come, down, and place. We’ll focus special attention on good manners like not jumping up. You will learn all the basics for getting – and keeping – your dog’s attention, even in distracting environments. We incorporate games and challenges to help make obedience less of a chore and way more fun.

Prerequisites:  For dogs six months and up.

Obedience 2:  Stays, Walking & Recalls

Advanced dog obedience training that focuses on walking politely on a leash and coming when called – two critical skills for a well-behaved dog. Through fun games, your dog will learn to master more challenging behaviors.

Prerequisites:  Obedience 1 or consent of instructor. For dogs six months and up.

Obedience 3:  Canine Good Citizen

Advanced obedience skills including extra control around distractions and beginning off-leash work. This class prepares your dog to take the Canine Good Citizen test.

Prerequisites:  Obedience 2 or consent of instructor. For dogs six months and up.

Therapy Dog Training

Share your dog’s love and comfort with those who need it most. Learn how to prepare for the Pet Partners temperament test for therapy dogs. This six-week workshop is designed to help you and your dog fine-tune your basic obedience skills by focusing special attention on good manners, control around distractions, introduction to hospital equipment, and therapy dog tricks.

Prerequisites:  Obedience 3 or Canine Good Citizen or consent of instructor. For dogs nine months and up.

Come When Called

Does your dog come when called? If not, this three-week workshop is for you. We”ll work on establishing a rock solid recall, getting your dog to turn on a dime when he hears his name – essential for the safety and well-being of your dog. Enrollment includes a long line training leash.

Prerequisites:  Obedience 1 or consent of instructor. For dogs six months and up.

Loose Leash Walking

Taking your dog for a walk should be a joy, not a hassle. Do you walk your dog, or does your dog walk you? If you’ve got a pup who pulls, balks, lunges, leaps, squirms, and every verb other than walk when on leash, this three-week workshop is for you. We’ll work on heeling, leash control and response to distractions. Important: If your dog barks uncontrollably at other dogs while leashed, please call us before enrolling, as this may not be the right class for you.

Prerequisites:  Obedience 1 or consent of instructor. For dogs six months and up.

Private Obedience Training

Need some extra attention? Our professional dog trainers can tailor instruction to perfectly suit your needs. This is also a great option for dogs that have social issues or act aggressively around other dogs or strangers. We’ll help you communicate effectively with your dog and solve basic behavior problems like jumping, housebreaking, barking, and nipping. After on-leash skills are mastered, you can learn voice control over your dog from a distance, hand signals, and distraction control.
